Adam Gundersen-Lord, a local of Ottawa, Vanier, shares a profound bond with his late mother. His most cherished memories are of their time at the cottage, where they would gather with his children and sister, enjoying his mother’s tealightful cooking. These moments, filled with love and togetherness, are the essence of Anina’s Cafe.

After his mother’s passing, he decided to open a coffee shop named after her, Anina, to honour her and allow customers to build that same community in his cafe. On Instagram, he shares the cafe’s story, “Her culinary excellence and compassion inspire every dish we serve and every moment we share with our patrons.” With his food truck, Mr. Norms he loves participating in community festivals and events, such as the Navan Fair and the Highland Games. Due to his community focus, he placed his cafe in a remote neighbourhood in Vanier, located at 280 Joffre-Bélanger Way, as a hidden gem directly in the community. The cafe’s hours are 8am-5pm on weekdays and 8am-3pm on weekends. 

Après le décès de sa mère, il a décidé d’ouvrir un café nommé en son honneur, Anina, pour lui rendre hommage et permettre aux clients de créer cette même communauté dans son café. Sur Instagram, il partage l’histoire du café (traduit): “Son excellence culinaire et sa compassion inspirent chaque plat que nous servons et chaque moment que nous partageons avec nos clients.” Avec son camion de nourriture, Mr. Norms, il aime participer aux festivals et événements communautaires, tels que la foire de Navan et les Highland Games. En raison de son engagement communautaire, il a installé son café dans un quartier isolé de Vanier, situé au 280 Joffre-Bélanger Way, comme un trésor caché directement dans la communauté. Les heures d’ouverture du café sont de 8h à 17h la semaine et de 8h à 15h la fin de semaine.

Today is actually their opening, the big launch of this community cafe! Similarly to them, Spill The Trend has recently launched, so we are celebrating and making this article a free read for everyone! What better way to start this blog, referencing Spill the Tea/beans, than by writing about a coffee shop opening? Having just opened my blog, Gunderson-Lord spoke about supporting local, small businesses.

Aujourd’hui, c’est en fait leur ouverture, le grand lancement de ce café communautaire! De même, Spill The Trend vient de lancer, donc nous célébrons et rendons cet article accessible gratuitement à tout le monde! Quelle meilleure façon de commencer ce blog, en référence à “Spill the Tea/beans,” qu’en écrivant sur l’ouverture d’un café? Ayant juste ouvert mon blog, Gunderson-Lord a expliqué l’importance à ce que les entreprises locales s’entraident et se soutiennent.

“I like keeping the money in the community… I know the struggle of making a small business work, so it’s good to support each other together,” said Gundersen-Lord.

“J’aime garder l’argent dans la communauté… Je connais la difficulté de faire fonctionner une entreprise locale, donc c’est bien de se soutenir mutuellement,” a partagé Gundersen-Lord.

He brews community by sourcing coffee beans from local businesses, and he even took suggestions from followers on the cafe’s Instagram account @aninascafe! Suggestions included beans from @littlevictoriescoffee, @opulencecoffee, and @brownbagcoffeeroasters .

Another person Gunderson-Lord values is his late father. His father was an artist whose paintings were inspired by his Cree heritage and use of recreational drugs. Due to his passing, he connected his coffee shop with an art gallery featuring his father’s work. This gallery will be open on the weekend and the first Friday of every month. However, buyers can also make an appointment to visit the gallery outside on weekends.

Une autre personne que Gunderson-Lord apprécie est son père défunt. Son père était un artiste dont les peintures étaient inspirées par son héritage Cri et l’usage de drogues récréatives. En raison de son décès, Gunderson-Lord a lié son café à une galerie d’art présentant le travail de son père. Cette galerie sera ouverte la fin de semaine et le premier vendredi de chaque mois. Cependant, les acheteurs peuvent également demander rendez-vous pour visiter la galerie en dehors des heures d’ouverture habituelles.

Cafes have always been trending, and I believe they always will. What makes this cafe unique? It incorporates an art gallery, has an aesthetically pleasing interior and exterior, and values sustainability! Notably, Gunderson-Lord gave his items a second life as he got them secondhand on Facebook Marketplace.

Despite the cafe opening just today, he already plans to improve it! His next step opening a patio to enjoy the warm weather! So go out, try their coffee, and spill the beans about your new favourite community cafe!
