Escapril Day 15: Undercurrent

Undercurrent
The water keeps flowing,
Even though you feel like you're drowning.

Your friends will hangout while you're on exchange,
You come back and feel more distant than ever.
But during that time, you grew such a strong bond with your exchange friends,
But the tide comes in and takes that away, carrying you back to Canada.

Photos keep getting posted,
New memories are being made,
And there’s an undercurrent of FOMO
You can’t quite swim away from.

You tell people it was good,
That you’re glad you went,
And you mean it—
You do.

But your body hasn't caught up
To the fact that it's over.
Every street back home seems normal,
But the version of you is different.

The undercurrent pulled you back to a type of life,
One that kept going without you,
Or maybe one
You can’t go back to.

And you stand in it, pretending it’s just shallow water,
Even as it moves around your feet--
It knows you don't belong in one place anymore.
The undercurrent ties you to a place you once knew but now feels unknown.
